Real people, real issues. Stories that matter.
I’m starting Portraits to do something different: real people, real issues, in depth, intimate.
The world has become so obsessed with the “issues” that we’ve forgotten the people those issues are supposed to be about. We’re “staying connected” to the point of losing those connections.
I want to make Portraits the antidote to a national narrative of political gibberish, celebrity gossip, and corporate agendas by delving into the world of one person, and following their story, their struggles, and their successes to uncover the reality the 24-hour news cycle doesn’t have time to see.
From a mother struggling to feed her family, to a single income earner caring for his aging mother, to a farmer experiencing one of the worst agricultural crises since the 1980s. People you won’t read about anywhere else, but that you might feel as if you know them, and see their stories as your own, or see a different perspective through new eyes.
There will be three to five people featured each year. But all sorts of connections will be made across communities, issues, occupations, histories, and I hope to add in videos and exclusive content into what I learn.
I want to connect us to something bigger, to each other, and ourselves. I want to give you something to think about, talk about. To show you the inner worlds you’ve not seen. To make the local national, and the personal universal. To talk to the most interesting people you’ve never heard of before.
These stories are meant to humanize. To show the flaws, the beauty, the dignity of people, not judge, proselytize, or maim by outside voyeurism. To open our eyes to the miracles of the mundane, the delights of our days, and the horrors of our everyday hardships.
You can join the official launch this October! If you’ve already subscribed, thanks for being here.
